How significant to Aberdeen history is the Gilruth family and where did they originate from?

There are, I believe, variant spellings of Gilruth, and I think they might originate from Ayreshire, but I'm not sure about that.

I have a good friend who's name is John Gilruth. His Family and forefathers are all from the Dundee area. Don't know how significant this is but maybe point you in the right direction.
Dundee and Aberdeen are not that far apart.

Lived in Aberdeen most of my life and although the name is familiar can't say that it is of much significance to Aberdeen history. But possibly if you go back in time there maybe some mention of them.
