Why am I always misunderstood as a tourist?

I have been in this city for 6 months but sometimes people will ask me "are you a tourist?" then I say "No, I am a student". Is it because I am a Chinese, the clothes I wear or the fact I always carry a bag with me? My Chinese friends don't seem to have such a problem.
