Why do some airlines noet people who are tall and very overweight sit in extra legroom seats? |
Travel Info Last year myself and my partner went to egypt wit falcon holidays, where on the flight, as a 6ft tall girl, i was assigned to an extra legroom seat.. however , when i asked for a seatbelt extender, they told me i could not sit in the extra legroom seat as this was not companty policy.. why can flights not be comfortable for veryone? i am not the only tall overweight person out there!!! Travel Tips For 9 years, I was a flight attendant. Emergency exit seats have special conditions for people who are permitted to sit there. This is a CAA (civil aviation) requirement, and if an airline does not follow these rules they are liable to prosecution. CAA does put inspectors on flights to ensure rules are adhered to. The list is as follows: (this is Uk law but I think its pretty universal to all countries) No children (under age of 16) No elderly/frail No deportees or prisoners in custody No obese (needing use of extension seatbelt) No pregnant women No sick No infants on laps The reasoning behind this, is that in an emergency, the people sat in these seats have to have the best chance of being able to open the exit and fit through without causing delay. They will be asked to help by the crew and should be aware of this. Also, with some airlines, you may see a 5ft person in this seat when a 7ft person is squeezed into another row. this could be because the 5ft has paid extra to sit here, and so long as the meet the requirements, they have paid for it. Hope that explains Others Im 6`5".Aeroplanes do not fit.Went to NY last year, middle of row,was most uncomfortable ive ever been, even though i asked for an aisle seat i think it is because these seats are next to the emergency exits and it needs to be easily access able to all passengers needing to use it. I don't know, but honestly, if there was an emergency, would you be able to handle the door, and the passengers if there was a panic?? I'm just being honest. I recently lost 120 pounds, so I totally know where you are coming from, but you also need to think about the other passengers safety as well and the side of the stewardesses. What some people assume is discrimination on the airplane is strictly a matter of smart business operation as well as safety. The airlines spend a lot of time trying to please customers, although it sometimes does not appear that way. People who are extremely large, often require extra space. The airlines collect revenue for every seat sold, and if one person takes up two seats while paying for one, then they would have lost money. In addition to that, if the airplane is full as a passenger, you would not be happy if another passenger is so large that he/she is literally sitting on top of you , and this happens more often than you might think. So which passenger should the airline leave behind in order to give the obese person an extra seat? Bear in mind also, that some musicians travel with their instruments and if they prefer not to have it checked as baggage, they have to pay a separate fare to use the seat in which they strap it down. Larger people would not expect to have to pay for the extra seat. In addition to that, an obese person generally does not move with as much ease as someone who is small/thin, thereby becoming an impediment in an emergency if he/she blocks an exit. Time is critical in an emergency. That is why children and disabled people are also discouraged from taking those seats by the exits. In the past, blind passengers were not given those seats, but some have filed lawsuits to demand the right to sit there. Still, in the event of an emergency one would only hope that the blind person, in lieu of being able to see, is able to assess the situation fast enough so that other passengers are not blocked from exiting. Would you be happy if you had to vacate a burning airplane, for example and an extremely large person could not get out of the seat fast enough and blocked you from escaping? While everyone should be sensitive to the difficulties that larger people face, one must also be realistic and sensible, knowing that any delay exiting an airplane in an emergency could mean the difference between surviving versus perishing. |
