How do airlines decide which plane flies a particular route?

Travel Info
I noticed that big airlines like Air France, British Airways etc have large numbers of aircraft and that certain routes get onoe type aircraft more often that other. Also an airline uses one type aircraft for flights at one time of the day and a differnet one for the rest of the day.

Travel Tips
hi there
I work for an airline and the answer to your question is numerous factors.
1: the route taken if flying on a route which is 8 hours or longer they tend to use larger aircraft ie 747-400 or B777
as its more cost efficiant to use larger ones than smaller ones as more stops would encurr.
2: passenger loads if the load from London-Hong-Kong-London is full capacity both legs thn again they will tend to use larger aircraft to accomodate passengers, bags and cargo.
3: If the route if of high revenue for both passengers and cargo then that would determine the type of aircraft utilised aswell.
4: If on shorter routes then of course smaller planes would be used again for cost effectiveness, crew useage and hours of the crew, and the amount of fuel used as we are all trying to be that bit more greener too.

Hope this helps

There are many variables. Those particular airlines use larger planes to fly overseas because of the distance involved. It depends on the distance of travel plus the number of passengers that usually travel a particular route. For long distance travel, more fuel is needed so airplanes that have a greater fuel capacity are utilized. The airline might also have more frequent flights on a particular route, but use smaller airplanes, burning less fuel. Some airports have runways that are too short to handle the weight of larger airplanes, so they have to use only small planes, while the larger airports can handle jumbo jets without any complications.
It's supply and demand. If more people are flying a route (say, Chicago to Dallas) they'll use a larger plane. If less people are flying the route (say, Chicago to Litte Rock) they'll use a smaller plane.
I don't know anything about running an airline but I know how to run a business. You run a business for only one thing: Profit.
I assume that they figure out (by statistics) how many passengers fly on a certain route and how much cargo, if applicable, is being shipped on that flight. The airlines then use a plane that will carry these pessengers for the least amount of money.
Lower cost is higher profits
go get a degree in Industrial Operations and Engineering and you shall learn the answer.
The time of day factor is probably to choose quieter air planes for late night flights and they choose the noisier ones for the day. obviously the bigger planes will do long haul trips. there isn't a huge difference in the number of seats on some of the big planes so sometimes it will depend on the number of passengers going to the destination. fuel costs come into it as well. hope this helps.
