If I book a plane ticket for overseas today and I would have to cancel later due to some reason, I am l under any obligation pay any amount of fee? (Assuming I didn't pay any money at the point of booking. )

Also,
I know I can book the ticket today and pay money later, but before how many days of the scheduled flight, would I have to pay the money?
