What can I do to overcome my fear of turbulence on a flight? |
Travel Info I really had a bad flight years ago where we hit bad turbulence and lasted about 5 minutes, since then I am really tense and in April will be flying overseas and change three flights. Heelp! Any advice? Travel Tips Please try to realize that what you expirenced was not normal. Most turbulence is mild, some bumps or shaking lasting a minute or two. Try relaxation excercises. Think of a calming scene and practice deep breathing...In through the nose...hold...out through the mouth. Do at least 3 deep breaths. Also, start at your feet. Tense your muscles up...hold 2-3 seconds...then relax. Move to your lower legs, the upper legs and so on until you reach your head. If your anxiety is really bad you can ask your doctor about prescribing something for the flight, however, this should be your last option. I must caution you on this. Some people don't react postively to anitanxiety meds. In some cases these meds can make their anxiety worse. If you are going to try taking something I strongly encourage you to try the med at home so you can see how you react. Source(s): Frequent traveler, former medical assistant. Other Travel Tips i just try to breath in and out, and close my eyes i even do that when we take off and land. Take an anxiety pill before boarding the plane. First of all I eat something salty before the flight so that I will not have to go to the restroom . Then I keep my seatbelt tight and think that every day there are a million flights around the world and that it is safer to fly than drive. Its still awful though. As silly (and hackeneyed) as this may sound, simply remember that turbulence is quite common yet results in almost no airline accidents. Checkout the website below and memorize these statistics. A greater concern would be pilot error. But in light of their training and experience along with the fact that you likely board an even riskier automobile everyday, just remember, you're safe. In fact, enjoy the bumps a little bit. That flight overseas can be awfully boring, and a little turbulence adds some necessary spice! http://www.planecrashinfo.com/cause.htm... |
