#3. To check for possible health isues that could disrupt the flight or endanger passengers. You may have read about the girl who was asked to get off a plane due to uncontrollable coughing. That was done for two reasons. One was that the pilot was worried her condition may be made more serious by changes in cabin pressure during the flight. The other was that planes used recycled air and other passengers would be exposed to the contagion.
#4. To make special accomodations, as necessary. This includes passengers who may require special physical assistance as well as children traveling alone.
