How often have you encountered moderate to severe turbulence on a flight, when, where, how long? |
Travel Info just trying to see how often it occurs, on 16 flights encoutered bad turbulence once, checking out if it occurs more in specific times of the year and over certain countries Travel Tips I've literally flown thousands of times and I've never encountered "severe turbulence". Severe turbulence is so strong that it would make the plane uncontrollable, sort of like taking a rowboat into an ocean with 30 foot waves. It's not likely that you'd survive severe turbulence if you were close to the ground as the pilot wouldn't have any opportunity to upright the airplane into a horizontal or normal flying position. As for "moderate turbulence', I've encountered one flight between Dallas and Boston that had a moment where the flight attendants scurried to the closest seats as the DC-10 (back in the 90's) had about 5 minutes of large up and down movements. Some people claim that they've dropped thousands of feet in a second.... that is pure baloney! I'm sure that we probably climbed/descended 100-200 feet in a few seconds but never was there any major disruption of safe flight, although a few covers over the oxygen masks popped down because of the bumpy flight. That is why you are requested to fasten your seatbelt while flying as the turbulence showed up rather quickly and without any noticeable storm clouds. I'd classify most turbulence that I've experienced as choppy, sort of like driving over a dirt road with many potholes. I realize that it might be scary for some to experience bumps in the air but millions of flights have flown without incident even during these less than comfortable moments. I'd say that most flights that I've taken are generally smooth and often early morning flights can be very smooth before the effects of convection can develop. Enjoy your flight.... most likely it will be smooth sailing! Source(s): My years of flight instruction and flights on commercial airlines Other Travel Tips My answer would have to be that it occurs more frequently near mountain ranges. I actually got bounced out of my seat once on a small prop commuter plane flying from Denver to Colorado Springs! I have flown frequently between Michigan and Colorado for the past 30 years, and never once did I NOT encounter turbulence near the Rocky Mountains. No where else though! Well i think it all depends on the time of year....I travel to Mexico (Miami- Cancun) twice a year and when its storming outside is the worst time of turbulance..last year when we were returning it was really bad (turbulence)....All the lights went off on the plane kinda scary with children...More in the hurricane season I think....June through November......That was the worst one and I have been going every year for the past 4 years... Good Travels~ We flew from northern kentucky to new orleans just before Katrina and we got some turbulance then. It was kind of cloudy out and really windy. On the way back it was smoothe sailing, but I hated how small the plane was... I don't like flying. I've only done it twice and about to do it again in a few months. I hate flying. Light turbulence: almost every flight, not enough to even really notice Moderate turbulence: about once every 20 flights. Captain turns on the fasten seat belt sign, gets bumpy and is hard to write. Severe turbulence: once. Flight crew was serving drinks to passengers and just sat down right where they were. lasted five minutes. I've been flying regularly for over 20 years. |
