I'm expecting a Seinfeld episode:

Have you ever noticed how they always give you the peanuts on the planes?

I mean, who ever thought the first thing somebody wants on a plane is a peanut?

some airlines provide them, some are cutting back cost, by not giving them out, they find alternatives like prezels,etc..
Some people are deadly-allergic to peanut. Airplane ventilation systems aeresolize the fine particles of peanuts, causing distress to a minority of passengers. To avoid lawsuits, airlines began distributing snacks that were less likely to cause a violent reaction.

Passengers are not prohibited from bringing peanuts on board, so people that have this allergy need to take precautions.

I know USairways doesn't serve peanuts anymore because a lot of people have allergies. However they do offer pretzels or snack mix instead.
When I started working as a F/A, we served peanuts with the drink service. They were taken away a few years later because of possible problems with allergies. Shellfish and peanut allergies can be life-threatening and would be a scary emergency in the air. Obviously, shellfish is easier to avoid but if someone is really peanut-sensitive, even other people around them opening hundreds of peanut packages, throwing peanut dust in the air, could trigger a reaction.

Lawsuits obviously are a risk but are not actually the motivating factor. No one wants an unscheduled emergency landing, believe me! Not only are they scary, mess up everyone's schedules but also cost the airlines thousands of dollars. It's such an easy situation to avoid!

Although I personally find those cracker snacks vile, and miss the peanuts, I'll put up with them to not have any onboard incidents.
