Why are tickets to London so expensive right now?!?

Travel Info
Based on previous experience I don't think I should spend more than 400 but everything is coming up 700+! Any advice about when to go and when and where to get tickets for the best deal? I could leave anytime in the coming year from Miami or Chicago and will stay about a week. Thank you!

Travel Tips
Part of the reason is the new Air Passenger Duty (APD) or "Green Tax" which adds $80 on flights from the US or Canada, for example. This on top of already high airport charges and security fees that were adding up to $120 to US-UK roundtrip flights. To top it all off, most airlines have fuel surcharges of $110 to $160 on transatlantic roundtrip flights. So a "base fare" sale price of $300 to London will in fact be $500+ with all of the taxes and fees added.

Also, be aware that June-August is peak season for transatlantic flights. Highest demand and highest prices. Winter, Nov-March except around Christmas, is the cheapest time for transatlantic flights. Myself, I like late spring and early fall travel, because the weather is still usually good, and the flight prices aren't as high as summer.

Here's a current snapshot of MIA-LON fares for the upcoming 10 months: http://www.farecompare.com/search/year.h...
... And from CHI: http://www.farecompare.com/search/year.h...
That site has fare alert email that you can sign to be notified when a fare goes on sale.

So, in summary, it's expensive because of season and taxes.
Travel off-season, and use Farecompare to get the absolute best offers. Happy travels.

I was in England in April. I bought my ticket for almost $600. I have traveled several times to the UK from various cities, but lately the costs are pretty high due to the Green movement. The UK government are putting prices up due to the environment. (Which is a good thing.)
I usually go to obrtiz, travelocity, or you can even go to different airlines websites and sometimes they have deals.
The best time of year is fall, winter (not near xmas), spring. Summer is high! going to Europe in the summer is pretty expensive.
Looks, like you are going to have to pay more than $400, especially going to England. Unless you are a student or get a really good deal from NYC or a major city! good luck!

Should have thought about it a couple months ago.
High season......June, July and August are ALWAYS the most expensive time to fly.
Holidays + Exchange Rate = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I have found the best time to be around Oct - Nov, before it gets too cold.
