In my own experience, standby has been available no matter when the ticket was bought. Sometimes, it's a trivial, no-cost matter and other times, it's tricky and costs extra. I usually go standby in situations: 1) when I want to fly out earlier than my originally ticketed flight, and 2) when I "miss" my original flight. In both cases, the airline wants to charge me for a confirmed seat on an alternate flight. I typically reject this offer as I'm usually flexible enough to wait for whatever comes next. In cases where I happen to show up late to make my original flight, the airline usually puts me on standby automatically. Of course, I never check any bags. I take everything carry-on. This makes last minutes changes so much easier and gives the airline one less reason to balk. As always, "your mileage may vary" and your success may depend upon whether you're operating from a major hub airport or a feeder airport. |
