What is the pregnancy weeks limit to board an airplane ?

Travel Info
My daughter is in USA presently and has purchased return-back air ticket for the date 13th Aug-2007 along with her husband. She is expecting by last week of October-2007/first week of Novenber-2007 as per medical report there. Whether she will have any rules problem in boarding an international / domestic airflight ?

Travel Tips
Ask your OBgyn...but my understanding when I was pregnant is if she is healthy it's pretty much ok up to the last month.
Others
I flew internationally even later in two of my pregnancies and was fine.

First find out what the airlines say. Different carriers have different rules.

Second, scedule OB visits right before both legs, unless it's a really short trip. He needs to check her cervix as this is a potiential problem that she can't feel herself (experience speaking!)

Third, have the OB write a dated note with her expected due date (or week of pregnancy) and have him note that she has no problems, if true.

Often they don't even look at the note, figuring that the woman is taking the risk upon herself. Some are sticklers for the rules. I looked like I was about to give birth about the last two months of each pregnancy. Some women simply show more than others so be sure she has the note to document things.

She should ask for an aisle seat and get up and move during the flight at least every hour. I had terrible water retention and it's even worse in the air. She should also be wary of the airline food because it can be quite salty, making the problems worse. A good solution is to bring some dried fruit and drink lots of water to compensate.

I'm glad she'll be with her husband, a luxury I never have! I also had to deal with one and then another child while pregnant. Have the hubby handle the baggage.

My OB was against the trip because of a premature labor incident while pregnant with my first. I'm a former flight attendant and they let us fly until 31 weeks. I didn't fly pregnant for medical reasons but still went to see my family in the States anyway.

Your daughter is flying under much better circumstances than I was so considering that everything went fine for me, I wouldn't worry about her trip, if she's careful.
First off, she needs to get a check-up from her doctor to make sure she is in fit enough health to fly. Most airlines will require her to have a medical certificate from her doctor at this stage, but she should verify this with her airline.

I traveled internationally this summer while pregnant as well (still have the return trip to do). I left when I was 13 weeks and will return when I am around 30 weeks. I have also traveled internationally with my first two pregnancies (my children are now 7&5).

FAA Airline regulations state :

Obstetrical patients are free to fly, but pose a significant risk in later stages of precipitating delivery during flight. Pregnancy past 32 weeks should be carefully considered for restriction from flight and must be accompanied with an authorization note from a doctor. Those past 36 weeks should be prohibited from flying unless personally accompanied by their doctor. (Taken from my husbands flight security and survival manual & FAA site) http://www.faa.gov/other_visit/aviation_...

All airlines make up their own rules and regulations regarding pregnant women. Some do not restrct travel at all, no matter what stage of pregnancy a women is in, and others start to restrict at 7 months, although the majority restrict around 36 weeks. She should call her specific airline, or visit their website, to get an accurate answer.

Please note that while airline regulations do not prohibit flying while pregnant, and even if she brings a doctors note, the final decision is entirely up to the Captain (who will be informed by the gate crew of her status).

While traveling I advise her to keep her medical records, and the name and number of her doctor. She should also get the name and number of a doctor where she will be staying/visiting in case an emergency comes up.

To keep herself safe and comfortable on the trip, have her follow these simple things:

*drink plenty of water
*avoid caffeine
*don't eat food that causes gas for at least one day before she travels (pressure builds up as you ascend through the altitudes and could cause pain)
*tell her to walk around as much as she can (up and down the aisles)
*stretch while sitting
*wear loose fitting clothing
*wear slip on shoes (her feet may swell)
*wear maternity support pantyhose or socks
*try to get an aisle seat or a front row seat for more leg room
*eat light foods
*eat small meals or snacks at frequent intervals rather than big heavy meals
*do not eat salt
*have her ask for a seat belt extender (depending on how big she is) and wear it just under her abdomen
*tell her to relax

I hope she has a safe (and uneventful) trip. If I can be of any more help or assistance, please feel free to contact me
