Experience of taking a flight with leg in plaster??? |
Travel Info I broke my fibia in four places, resulting in a half plaster leg cast. I am due to fly in less then a month to USA (9 hours!) Has anyone out there experience of this, and tips, all HELPFUL and SENSIBLE tips greatfully received please! Travel Tips The best thing for you is to be on that Assistance. Call your travel agent where you get your ticket to put you on an assistance. When you check yourself in, there is a place where they put you on a list for those who needs an assistance and when you are ready, there is someone who come and help you to the gates. They will put you in a wheel chair so you don't need to walk and they will guide and push you in a wheelchair till you get seated. Same thing when you land and time to get out the airplane, they will come and put you again in a wheelchair and bring you where you're suppose to be in till you get out the airport. Ask for that so it will be easy for you. Have a nice trip. I always put mom to this assistance since she's old and can't read but through this , she can travel alone. Try it and you'll be alright. Assistance is Free of charge. Others Well I would inform your travel insurance company of yor injury as it may void your insurance if you dont. Another suggestion is to contact the airline you are flying with to see if hey will change your seating to make you more comfortable. It will take you a little longer to get through security. Ask to pre- board the flight because it will take you a little longer to get in your seat. If you have to change planes ask that an electric cart meet you to take you to your next gate. Get a aisle seat and depending on which leg you broke make sure the leg with the cast is on the outside by the aisle. I had knee surgery and was in a brace for a while,so I always got a aisle seat on the right side of the plane because my left knee had the brace on it. You may try to get the aisle bulkhead seat. Good luck! the first thing you should do is inform your airline company you broke your leg. most can only take 4 reduced mobility passengers per flight so they could actually turn you down at the airport and refuse to let you board if they already had 4 booked. as for comfort on the plane you'll have to rely on other passengers to be careful around you. First you should consult your doctor about flying with a cast on due to deep vein thrombosis- (see site below) I would also recommend that you call the airline customer service or check the website for the airline that you are flying with to see if they have any special requirements such as getting extra seats so that you can elevate your leg or upgrading to First class. Many airlines have special requirements for people with broken limbs Get to the airport early 2 or 3 hours before flight so that you can check in early and get a more comfortable seat When you check in ask for Pre board assistance (usually the first people on the plane) also as for a seat with a little extra leg room if you are flying economy then you will probably be seated at the front of the economy section (or even close the the emergancy door if that is not available) or if it is possible you may be able to upgrade to business or 1st class (there may be a charge for this) http://www.inate.org/en/1/2/6/20/default... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?... Definitely preboard and get an aisle or bulkhead seat so you have some leg room. Check with your doctor ahead of time too so they can tell you if you are at risk for any type of blood clot and what you should do to prevent it. |
