What happens to airplane 'flush'? |
Travel Info Silly question right? But every time I flush the toilet on an airplane, I begin to wonder, "where the hell does that stuff go??!" I was told, as a kid, that it is flushed into the atmosphere.. Umm, but wouldn't it have fallen on someone's head or something? Or does it just disintegrate?? Travel Tips A long time ago there used to be the phenomenon of "blue ice" falling from aircraft but that has stopped. It is not a septic tank but a simple holding tank which holds everything until the plane lands and the waste tanker comes along and sucks out the contents to be taken away and processed. The same is used on inland boats for example on UK canals. All stored in tanks until you get to a pump out station. The blue stuff is (a) to control smell and bacteria and (b) so there is no doubt at all what your dealing with and anything which is contacted by the blue is partly stained. Must be a rotten job being the one to suck out the plane's tanks but someone has to do it. Others Well nowadays the toilets are vacuum powered, they suck it in with a small amount of sanitizing liquid and it goes into a mini septic tank under the plane, The vacuums make it so there's really no wateer needed, and the pipes are very thin. Nope, it's just stored in a tank until it reaches the destination. If you look carefully out the window, you'll see another plane flying behind connected by a hose. |
