How do you amuse an infant (under a year) on a long plane trip?? |
Travel Info does anyone have experience, of travelling with their baby on a long plane journey? what was it like? Travel Tips Yes, I'm a former Flight Attendant with three children. I fly alone with mine about every six months between Europe and California. It actually isn't a big deal at this age. If you read any articles on flying with children, they'll tell you to nurse on take-off and landing. This isn't actually the case. They need to swallow sometime on the whole ascent and it's a good idea at the top of descent. Landing is too late. The only way to fly safely with a child is for him or her to have their own seat and to bring the carseat with you. They need to be IN those seats on take-off and landing (not nursing in your lap) during those periods since they're the most dangerous parts of the flight. Make sure the carseat is FAA approved. Even if you haven't purchased a separate ticket for the baby, bring the carseat and try to get an empty seat next to you. I go into more details here; http://flyingwithchildren.blogspot.com... The best precaution is to take them to the pediatrician within a week of flying and have the baby's ears checked for a hidden infection. If their ears are healthy, there shouldn't be a problem. I flew for 13 years and rarely saw any real problems with children and ears. I personally feel that a baby under a year is too young for a DVD player or medications in air. Bring soft toys that don't make a lot of noise. Don't depend on the airlines for food or supplies. If the baby crawls, bring extra socks to put over their hands. I recommend dressing them in sleepers and bringing extras. Make sure you have enough diapers to cover delays. If your baby can stand, practice changing diapers while he or she is standing. This is really helpful when traveling and obviously easier with boys. Make sure you have a really good baby carrier. I cover this more in the article above (it was written on request for a local newsletter about 7 years ago and re-edited many times). It is entirely non-commercial and only written to help out my fellow parents and coworkers. All the stuff I wish I could have told parents to do before leaving...like bringing enough diapers! Have a good flight. It'll go fine. I've flown alone with babies plus one and two older siblings and lived to tell the tale! Others No but ive had to sit next to one and it was HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... Please bring it sleepy things and sickie mouth closer things. And ear things. Sit in front of the wing where it is quieter so the baby is less disturbed. It can really go either way-as proved by my nephew on a there and back. Just do what you do for car rides. A portable DVD player with like Dora or Spongebob can really help, but they won't like headphones. movies. toys. candy. skills. ask to let him/her go see the pilot. ~or~ you can just let him do what he wants or feels like with boundaries! give it some easy soft music it may go to sleep give it a squishy object that is to big for its mouth Breast feed. :-}) Not so fun! Make sure to bring snacks and favorite toys! Try to go when the baby will be sleeping for the majority of the trip. TRUST ME YOU WILL WANT THIS! My baby was 13 months old and it was really hard. Well he sat in my lap and that was the hard part about it. One thing I didn't know is you can take the stroller all the way to the plane. Right before you board they will give you a tag and they will put it in the luggage compartment as you are seating. Then when you get off they pull it off so you can have it available right away! Good luck! |
