What are the chances of getting an earlier flight as a stand-by at the airport? |
Travel Info My boyfriend's stopover in Atlanta is 12 hours long and he'd rather just take the next available flight. He's going to be on stand-by. What are the chances that they'll give that to him? What is the procedure and what does it depend on? Travel Tips It all depends on the airline and the number of confirmed passengers. What he needs to do is go to the gate he wants to get on, tell the gate agent what flight he is booked on and ask him/her if he can be added to the standby list. Depending on the passenger load of that flight he may or may not get on. I would tell him that if he doesn't get on that flight, just keep "gate hopping" until he can get on. Keep in mind that it is summer time and a lot of families are on summer vacation. So, a weekend flight he probably will not get on. The best days (I've found) for riding standby are Tuesdays and Thursdays. As another reminder, he should be reminded to thank the gate agent whether he gets on or not. Be very friendly to them. It may help in getting him on that flight or another one shortly thereafter. Source(s): I'm a flight attendant and fly standby quite often. Other Travel Tips go to the ticket dest in arrivals .he will be given a stand by ticket to go through security .after all the pax have boarded if any seats remain he will be then asked to board .it depends on the flight being full or not.ask at the ticket desk how many have booked on the flight and how many pax the aircraft can carry .you should be able to do the math then.you might have to pay a extra charge for stand by .depending on your carrier Tell him to check the monitor screens and find a flight leaving sooner, then go to the check-in counter and ask the attendant if she/he can put him o that flight and cancel his standby !! The chances are he may get it if he's lucky !! All a matter of timing and others not ariving at the airport on time .. I'd say he has a 50/50% chance!! Good luck and hope he gets there sooner... A frequent traveller!! Experience Depends on how full the other flights are. I live in Australia and I had to go from Townsville to Brisbane on Qantas. My group stuffed up the booking by putting me on a seperate flight 2 hours later but when they got to check in, I went with them and just asked......they gave me the very last seat on the plane there and then at check in....and we wernt the last to check in either!! Of course, he cant go in the check in line as he is traveling alone and not with a group that stuffed up the booking but my advice is to go up to the bookings desk and just ask to get on the earlier flight. Or go up to another airline, show them his ticket and they may let him on if there is a vacancy! |
