Quesions about ailine traveling with lap infant....?

Travel Info
I am flying out of town this weekend with my 17 month old as a "lap infant" (aka - no seat of her own). Does anyone know
a) Does a stroller count as a carry on (if you stow it at the front of the plane?
b) Does she count as one of my "carry-on" items? (o:
c) Can she have her own carry on bag?

Any moms that have traveled with infants lately - your help and tips on traveling with a toddler will be appreciated. Thanks.

Travel Tips
At 17 months, they can be squirmy. Not only is it safer for her to have her own carseat but it's more comfortable for you and everyone around her.

Besides, wont you need a carseat at your destination?

Check that it has a FAA sticker. When you check-in, ask if you can be seated next to an empty seat. Ground agents will often at least try, since they know sitting next to a lap toddler isn't so fun for everyone.

A common misconception is that carseats have to go at the windows. They actually can't block passage to the aisles for anyone else so you're fine in a center bulkhead seat (wall in front) if there are aisles on both sides. This depends on the aircraft and the airlines can come up with their own stricter rules (i.e. say only windows).

For more information about carseats and flying with children in general, I put together a totally non-commercial article and put it on a blog for anyone to read. It was originally for a local American expat club newsletter.

Good luck getting a seat! Source(s): ex int'l F/A 13 years, 2 carriers
I fly alone with my three kids between Europe and California about every six months since each was about 4 months old, plus smaller flights...
Other Travel Tips
If there is still room, buy her a seat - this is the safest way for her to travel. Lap infants can be thrown around during turbulence - the was a huge expose on one of the news shows about how unsafe this is. With one seat belt around both of you - you squash her in an emergency.

If you must travel this way, call the airline with the other questions - each one is different.
No, an infant does not count as a carry-on piece of luggage. No, she is not a paying pasenger so she is not allowed a carry-on bag. See website below for info on the stroller. Also...CALL the airline as answerer # 1 said to get THEIR specific answers.

If you have a stroller/car seat take it with you. As a gate agent I usually ask anyone traveling with a lap infant if they brought their car seat and if they did and I have enough room on the aircraft I usually block the seat next to her so she can use the seat next to her with the car seat. That doesn't mean every agent will do so, but most of the ones I work with will try and sit the mom alone if possible.
