They say that this will be the worst summer ever for flight delays? |
Travel Info Should people maybe consider, you know, not flying? Should the US put more stock back into its railroads, so that there is a viable alternative to air travel? Travel Tips Personally, I love to travel by train. People should do it more often. You are right, this will be a horrible summer for flying. Carriers are overbooking flights - and there's a lot less flights now! I have not been on a plane with empty seats for over 4 years now! Others The airlines have cut back on flights to save money and that is why there are flight delays. They are overbooking flights, reducing the number, and still have raised ticket prices due to the price of fuel. I don't think the US should put more stock back in its railroads. I just think the airlines need a major overhaul. I have been working for the airlines for a while, and this is the worst aviation summer since pre 9/11. Back then, every airline was flying 757's between Boise, Idaho and Tulsa, Oklahoma (not literally, but you get my point.) After 9/11, the airlines tanked. Today, the legacy carriers are using little regional jets for most route and have put a lot of their bigger jets in the desert for storage because of fuel costs. This means now we have technically more planes taking up airspace, but less room on them. You may have heard the term "load factor." That's the percentage of seats that are filled on planes. Well it's hovering around 90% right now. That's an all-time best. But it's due to the fact that every airline, accept JetBlue and Airtran, oversells their flights by up to 30 people or more. Now you have to factor in the weather. Summer time is a good time to get those random thunderstorms in the afternoon. They are called convection storms form from the heat of the day. Well those little storms will reak havoc on the big airports such as DFW, ORD, JFK, and ATL. Every one of those airports are stretched to the max of their landing/takeoff capacity already. So any little disruption will cause extreme delays. Instead of railroads, people should just drive. For instance, I can fly for free literally anywhere in the world *except intl taxes* and I don't. I'd rather rent a car to drive across the country. It's more scenic and I know I'm not going to be sitting in the airport for a four hour delay when I am only flying about a five hour car drive away. I work for an airline, and unfortunately I see this stuff everyday now. They said 2006 was the worst and guess what, 2008 will be worst than 2007. Same stuff every year. Fly if needed, if not drive, walk or take a horse...save the ozone and all that jazz. |
