Why is the front part flightdeck of a plane called a cockpit?

Travel Info
Is it sexist - or at least a bit un-PC?

Should it be renamed to something else? There are quite a few women pilots these days.

Travel Tips
The first "cockpits" were actual pits in the ground constructed to house "cockfights" to the death between game cocks.

As a name for the scene of such grisly matches, "cockpit" showed up in English in the 16th century. By the 1700's, "cockpit" was being used as a metaphor for any scene of combat, especially areas (such as parts of Belgium and France) known as traditional battlefields. "Cockpit" was then adopted by pilots in World War I, who applied it to the cramped operating quarters of their fighter planes. Source(s): http://www.word-detective.com/082498.htm...

with a female pilot the "cockpit" becomes the "hen house
A lot of jokes have been told with the punch line "why do you think they call it the cockpit", like "why is it that most pilots are men? but it's got nothing to do with dicks. Cockpit as a term for the pilot's compartment in an aircraft first appeared in 1914 and from about 1935 cockpit also came to be used informally to refer to the driver's seat of a car, especially a high performance one, and this is official terminology in Formula One. The term is most likely related to the sailing term for the coxswain's station in a Royal Navy ship, and later the location of the ship's rudder controls
When piloting became mainly computerised, all the flight crew had to do was keep an eye on the dials and readings. This was very boring. So, taking into account their new found free time plus the fact they were flying over international waters, they decided to hold **** fights.

Originally they just called it "the pit" for dramatic effect. But most people thought this meant they were just living in their own filth. So they added "****" to the name, thinking this would describe what went on behind the door. How wrong they were!
The flight deck usually is referred to " the first people to arrive at the scene of the accident " . Then the 747 came along...
