Why is the Louvre named the Louvre? |
Travel Info I just visited the Louvre and was wondering how it got it's names - is it a famous person? an area/geo Travel Tips The Louvre was originally a fortress built by king Philippe Auguste in order to protect Paris from river invasions. Chains were used to restrain river trafic. The accurate origin of the name of this fortress is still in debate. - Latin origin: lupara lupera was reportedly the name of the place where the Louvre was built. It is very close to "lupus" (wolf) - Anglo saxon origin: lauer lower or lowar (guard tower) - loperia: kennel where dogs, used for wolf hunting were kept In any case "louvre" sounds a lot like "loup" (wolf) Source(s): An excellent blog about the Louvre (FR) http://mesbaladines.blogspot.com/2005_03...
