I am American and I have lived and traveled in Europe for almost 5 years now and I don't find that I have any issues. I am not fluent in French, but I do make an attempt while in France and I think they appreciate it. I think you will be happy to know that in Normandy, there are French families who come out every week and put fresh flowers on the graves of Unknown American soldiers. Just like you cannot believe everything you see on tv about Americans, you cannot believe the same about Europeans. Some of the best friends I have ever made in my life, I have made here in Europe. It really is not so bad. I don't see any reason to fear people here anymore than in the US itself. In fact, there is significantly less physical crime (murder, rape, etc.) in Europe that in the U.S. I feel safer here. Also, I think that in most countries, if you treat people with respect and be humble about what you know and do not know, you will get along fine. Smiles are universal and really do work in any language. |
