Travel Tips
Lucky you - I think that the Languedoc area is wonderful. You don't say which country you are from, so I am writing from a UK perspective but much relates to anyone moving to France from overseas.

Thanks to the number of Britons out there, there is quite an established network of information. Firstly, you must ensure that you cover all legal aspects of buying your property, particularly as there are several types of tenure. I strongly recommend that you get advice from an English speaking notaire as unless you are buying the house alone, the type of ownership you have will have significant effects on change of circumstances such as divorce and in the long term on inheritance arrangements. The laws are not straightforward, hence the need for professional advice.

Other than that, you will need to organise your own legal and social arrangements including a carte sejour for yourself, and also metriculation for you car if you're over there for 6+ months and exporting it. You need too to be up on medical arrangements and so on. Banking is also different to the UK so you need to understand what the rules are especially to overdrafts (I understand that the penalties of going into the red over there are much heavier than they are in the UK).

Finally, do learn French if you don't have a good command of it. It will help in emergencies, enable you to integrate and get to know your neighbours and makes answering the phone much easier!

As a starting point, I'd recommend looking at French News - they have a web site and cover information of interest for British (English speaking) foreign residents and Francophiles. See link below to their site.

My parents moved over more than 10 years ago and have never looked back.

Best of luck! Source(s): http://www.french-news.com/
