I would like to move to the atl? |
Travel Info i want to move there in aug 2007 does any one have any advice for were i could find a good job down there i have a college degree in sociology and i am moving from nyc Travel Tips Like everyone else is saying the www.ajc.com is a good place to start. However you should also check out the Department of Labor in your area. Many people don't know that they have employment databases open to the public as well as advisement and people who will help you with your resume. Also if you're looking for a government job, which Atlanta has quite a few of, check out www.usajobs.com. Also check out some of the local non-profits. I worked with a refugee agency in Atlanta and I know that they employ alot of professionals in the field of sociology. Others try AJCjobs.com - they help you find local jobs in and around atlanta. You should choose to decide to live in Atlantic Station which is in the heart of Atlanta (if u can afford it, and since your coming from NYC you should be). Check out atlanticstation.com they are like a mini NYC with condo/apartments, supermarket, Target =) and tons of restaurants!! If not Atlanta, go for Metro Atlanta which are the counties that surround Atlanta. There are so many jobs in Atlanta, the newspaper should be all you need. ATL is a good move from NYC. A good area to live is in Gwinett county or the north area of Fulton County. As close to 85 as possible and as far north as you can stand. The reason is when driving to and from NY, you are already on your expressway and you gotta live on your expressway. People from Tennessee live on 75, people from Mississippi and Alabama live on I20 and people from the crib stay on 85 Welcome to the south!!! A couple of things you need to be aware of; #1 the "good 'ol boy network" is a ridiculous standard in the south, people's cousins, nephews, brother in laws and anyone else they can profit off of get the job first. This also works with minority or subordinate groups in Atlanta, if your not a minority of course this does not apply. #2 Southern hospitality is not real, yes occasionally it can be but most of the time it is to your face. Don't trust the gossipers initially, just listen to what they say rather than participate. As far as living, if you can afford it I recommend the Atlantic Station area. It is an awesome area located in the heart of the city. Ranging from 350k-1.5mil. If not go west, it is a little further out but its not as nuts as the north side and not crime ridden like the south and east. I feel, that most companies are going through Temp Services, for Security reasons. You may not fnd something, that pays, what you want. But they can get you hooked up to someone that can pay, in the Long run. If you have the chance to wait it out. Good Luck. Post on AJC.com, they usually have the best job opportunity listings. Good luck and welcome to Hot-Lanta =) |
