I would like to find a job before moving to another state. What is the best way to do this? |
Travel Info I plan on moving from Chicago area to the Atlanta area this summer, but I would like to have a job secured before making that move. What is the best way to go about this since I'm not currently residing in the area? How do I address this in my cover letter? Are companies willing to do phone interviews? I will have a time frame to visit for interviews. Plus when should I start looking if I don't plan on living there until July or Aug? Any information will be helpful. Travel Tips I was in the same boat a few years ago. It's difficult - many companies want someone to start asap, and don't want to feel obligated to pay for any moving costs. I would make sure you say in your cover letter that you are already planning to move to Atlanta (so the company knows it doesn't have to pay moving costs) and give the dates when you would be available for interviews. Many of them don't want to wait for someone to make travel arrangements for an interview, or pack up and move. If you are up front with the date you are planning to move, then they would work around that and you might have more of a chance. Is there anyone you know in Atlanta? You could use their address, and perhaps get an Atlanta phone number for your cell phone. I know one place where I worked didn't even look at a resume if it had an out-of-state address. Lastly, one thing you could pursue is getting some temp work for the first few weeks you are in Atlanta while you pursue something more permanent. Hooking up with a staffing agency might help increase your chances as well (that's how my husband found his job when he moved to Atlanta). If you are waiting for a job in order to get a place to live, perhaps you could save enough money to stay in one of those "Extended Stay" places - they can be like $150/week I think. Source(s): experience Other Travel Tips I really liked your suggestion about getting a phone with an Atlanta number. Good Idea. Thanks!! look online? Monster.com Past your resume and indicate you're willing to relocate to Atlanta. Phone interviews are extremely common because they're very cost effective. Your cover letter should say, :Although I currently live in Chicago, I have been planning a move to Atlanta for well over a year...." It doesn't hurt to post on Monster right now. That gives you time to see what kinds of jobs are out there, to see who is hiring, and to make improvements to your resume. Besides the use of the internet that you are familiar with, subscribe to the local paper and get a feel for the city as well as the job section of the paper. If you can find a "pen pal" on the internet you can ask pertinent questions of them. You might also contact a real estate person and the chamber of commerce there. |
