I will be attending the Final Four in Atlanta. is Buckhead a good area to stay? |
Travel Info We found a hotel with a much better rate than hotels in the downtown area. I'm carious about the overall neigborhood. is it safe? is there stuff to do? Will finding transportation be easy between Buckhead and Downton for the games? thanks a ton for any replies!!! Travel Tips This is actually a surprisingly difficult question. Buckhead, overall, is a very nice area of Atlanta. Some of the best dining, shopping, and entertainment is in this district. There are several MARTA stations in Buckhead, so transportation should not be a problem. This is also the area of the more confrontational night life. There are more hip hop clubs in this area, and it has gotten pretty rough on the bar strip. But there are also a lot of cops. Buckhead during the final four is CRAZY. All of Atlanta really is, but especially Buckhead. There are a lot of people in town, and they all want to go out and party after the games. I went to Georgia Tech for school, and would not go to Buckhead during the Final Four or SEC Championship (football). DO NOT DRIVE. The roads are bumper to bumper in every direction for literally miles. Everything you hear about Atlanta traffic is multiplied 10 fold during this time. Take MARTA, even if it means a bit of a walk and a transfer to a bus. MARTA usually sets up direct buses with special lanes for big events like this. It will save you time, trust me. Plus you can have fun and not worry about driving, drinking, etc. You will be safe, you will have fun, it is a good area, but there will be a LOT of people there. Others Well actually Craig's answer would be pretty accurate 3 years ago but Buckhead's nightlife has pretty much dried up since the Buckhead community association made clubs close at 2am. Buckhead is extremely safe and is a great location to stay in. All the "hip hop" clubs have moved to midtown and you dont have all the congestation of downtown and midtown. Use the marta to get around and stay around the mall. I would suggest the Westin in Buckhead or the Ritz both are extremely close to everything as well as the marta. I want to remind you that crime is everywhere. However as a resident of Buckhead I dont think you will have to worry about crime but instead about all the money you will be spending in at world renowed retailers such as Saks or Neimans and eating dinner at Wolfgang Puck or Emerils.
