Atlanta driving question?

Driving through Atlanta on a Monday morning, Friday morning, or Saturday morning to or from Chattanooga. Hitting Atlanta around 10 a.m. Is it better to take 285 or 75 straight through? If 285, east or west?

First I have to say if at all possible, do it Saturday. You should not have any problems with traffic on a normal Saturday at any time. I would stay straight through. You get to see the city, and it is a little quicker.

On Monday or Friday, at 10 am you are a little in the danger zone. You do not want to go through any earlier. Rush Hour in Atlanta is terrible, and lasts all the way up until 10 am. You shouldn't have a problem then... unless there was some sort of accident. If there was a problem on the highway, it could still be backed up from it.

I would still suggest staying on I-75 straight through. Since it is the morning, once you get to the center of the city, 75 coming out the other side shouldn't be a problem. Your only trouble spot will be possibly between I-285 and Downtown as you go into the city. On 285 there are multiple trouble places. Getting on 285 can be bad, and getting back on 75 is usually a nightmare. Stay on 75. If you will have a passenger, you have the HOV lane on 75 that you do not have on 285. That is a big difference. Listen to the radio for traffic, and be prepared for both. If you hear of an accident in the city, but clear on 285, switch off. Just have to be ready for it all.

Atlanta is gridlock , you have to hit it or not. I would time it before six am if I were you. Otherwise, just cross your fingers and bring plenty of patience. Expect the worst so if it's ok, you'll be pleasently surprised. 75 is always the pits!
You should be fine on a Saturday. During the week, I would suggest 285 on the west side, which is a little less crowded than the east side.
