Atlanta is not 85 percent black for the moron in the first post. Depending on where you are in the city, it varies. But the Atlanta metro population has about 5 million people and many are black, white or hispanic.

In atlanta itself, you have downtown, I would stay there if you want to conduct business or you will need to be down there.

Many people will stay in Buckhead, more an upscale neighborhood in Atlanta proper, and close enough to the nightlife.

Really if you want to stay in Atlanta, you can stay in downtown, Midtown(predominately a gay area) or Buckhead.
For nightlife and great shopping I always recommend Buckhead.

If I were you, be very considerate where you stay.
check www.hotels.com for hotel rates. Depending on your budget I would try and find something in either midtown or buckhead if you are here for pleasure or in downtown (for business)

Stayed here before, would defenitaly go back, great location 2 blocks from Marta Station (PeachTree Center Station), Outdoor pool, 2 blocks from World of Coca Cola, Georgia Aquarium, ESPN.
