I am relocating to Atlanta area what is the best area? |
Travel Info i am looking for a good school district Travel Tips Gee, this is too complicated to answer thoroughly in such a brief forum. I'll try, though. Atlanta has some excellent (and expensive) private schools, but I assume you're looking for public schools. Generally speaking the best public schools are in Roswell and the northern part of Fulton County (that is, the area around Alpharetta / Roswell). Roswell High School is a National School of Excellence, and the other high schools in that area are great. The city of Decatur has its own tiny school district with only one high school plus feeder schools. It's a very wholesome, hometown atmosphere. Decatur is one of the more progressive (i.e., left-wing) parts of Atlanta. If you're a Republican, I wouldn't bother moving there. And if you have a "W" sticker on your car, plan to get an earful everywhere you go in Decatur. By the way, Decatur has very high taxes -- partly because it has its own school district -- and houses are expensive there as well. A normal 3 BR / 2 BA house will go for at least $325k there. But the quality of life is great there, and it's only 15 minutes or so from downtown Atlanta. Some of the other suburbs have decent schools. Parts of the city of Atlanta are OK, too, though you have to look at specific neighborhoods to see how the schools are. Gwinnett County (northeastern suburbs) has the largest school system in the state of Georgia. Some of their schools are quite good. They are known more for sports, but the academics are also good at places like Brookwood High school. Cobb County (northwestern suburbs) has some good schools too. Generally speaking the best Cobb schools are in the eastern part of the county. South of Atlanta, a lot of the schools really struggle to succeed academically. But that doesn't mean it's a lost cause. I know someone from Jonesboro who was admitted to Ivy League schools this year, and she went to a public school. Some of the most important questions when moving to Atlanta are: Where will you be working, how much house can you afford, and what's your tolerance for sitting in huge traffic jams? Your place of work may be one of the biggest determining factors. Good luck with that because the metro area now exceeds 5 million, and there are so many neighborhoods. Others Look at www.greatschools.net, to research any school district in the U.S. I am moving to Suwanee, Georiga. It's a city. My dad wants me to move there for the schools. They have REALLY HIGH GRADE AVERAGES. THEY ARE ALL IN THE HIGH A's. They're like 99, 98, 97, 98, and grades like that. That's the only reason my dad wants my family to move there. So Suwanee is a good place for a high education. Outside of Atlanta is the best area. The inner City is a nightmare during rush hour traffic. My last visit to Atlanta which I prefer Talanta was awesome until I hit the rush hour traffic and the I run out of gas and got a ticket and my car towed. Rule number 1 IMake sure you have a full tank of GAs if your gonna drive in Atlanta Talanta Here is another website that can help you compare schools: http://www.schoolmatters.com/ I'm a little biased since I came from an urban public school district and went on to have an Ivy education. I think most schools can suit anyone's needs very well. What's most important is having excellent teachers and being an involved parent. You could theoretically be in a "bad" school district but have awesome teachers. In fact, some districts offer more pay to great teachers who work in the schools that serve lower income kids - they actively recruit the best teachers. I worked in an after school program in Cobb County and I have some experience with Atlanta Public Schools. All that said, do some research on the schools on the web and then go talk to the teachers and the principal. A principal very much sets the tone in a school as do teachers. Find out how long teachers have been working at that school - often it's a good sign if you have teachers who have been at a school a long time - it speaks to the environment that the principal creates. I lived in Atlanta for four years and the whole time I lived inside the perimeter - never had any issues with safety. I think if you exercise the normal precautions necessary for city living, you can live almost anywhere in ATL. That said, some "good" areas have already been mentioned that I think most would be comfortable with - Alpharetta, Decatur, etc. Smyrna/Vinings is also very nice as are Douglasville, Marietta and Austell. I have a cousin that went to high school in Marietta and he is now in college studying engineering at the University of Michigan. Best of luck to you! Also, be sure to check out ajc.com and atlanta.craigslist.org for resources on Atlanta. Do you prefer the suburbs or the city life? Atlanta has both. If I was moving here I would give some serious consideration to North Fulton and Forsyth County. Forsyth Country is a little far out in the suburbs, but home values are appreciating quickly and the area is growing fast. Gwinnett County and Cobb County is also very good. If you decision is based upon schools alone then look to North Fulton. OK...some of the previous posters posted some great information. I'll give you a condensed ranking of areas assuming that school district is the only factor...(ignoring traffic, diversity, price, etc etc) 1. North Fulton 2. East Cobb 3. West Gwinnett 4. City of Decatur (w/in city limits) |
