I am possibly being relocated to Atlanta, GA for work. How far is college park in relation to Atlanta proper? |
Travel Info Aso, I prefer a more upper middle class area of housing and homes. ($800,000-$950,000) Any recommendations? Travel Tips College park is on the perimeter, probably 5 miles from downtown. And this is atlanta, the gayest city in the south, I think we have as many gay bars as straight. Everywhere in Atlanta is gay friendly. I am not too sure of the price range, but I am pretty sure the Virginia Highlands would be in that range, it is a nice area and I have known a few gay couples that lived there, and they loved it. Vinings is also nice, though it may be a little more than that. I live in Conyers, about 25 min (with no traffic, an hour or more in rush hour). Out here the housing is much cheaper, averaging 300,000 or so. I have been openly gay for going on 7 years, never had any problem, it is not quite as accepted as in atlanta, but still not a problem. Others There are newer houses they are building in the East Point and Hapeville area and the city is GAY friendly as well and it is a 10 minute or less commute from College Park....Midtown also is a good place for the gay friendly but the is about a 15-20 minute commute from college park...Midtown is located next to downtown and it is considered Atlanta... You should also consider Decatur. Its inside the perimeter. EXTREMELY gay friendly. Its also a nice, kinda hip and funky. The areas closest to downtown are very upper class, the further you get from downtown, the lower the income. Good luck! I want to second what the other person said about Decatur. It's very gay-friendly (though frankly there are a lot more gay women than men there), the quality of life is outstanding, and the commute to College Park wouldn't be too bad. You would most likely take I-285 around the southeastern part of the Perimeter. But given the situation you describe, I think you would be happier in Midtown. For $800k you can get a super-nice condo and have plenty of money left over for decorating, investing, etc. Midtown is close to I-75 -- which is a convenient way to get to College Park. And while you're at it, consider living in College Park. Developers are building a lot of beautiful new Craftsman-style homes in the range of $300-450k. These homes are replacing very small houses that were built for working-class people in the 1920s and 1930s. Most of College Park gets very little noise from the airport, surprisingly. You would be close to work. College Park isn't known for its gay scene (or any scene) but you would be a short drive or MARTA ride from the restaurants and bars in Midtown. By the way, the epicenter of gay life is at 10th and Piedmont in Midtown. The neighborhoods to the south and east of there are close to the biggest park in the city. You won't have trouble meeting people there, that's for sure. |
