What areas of Atlanta can I walk around at night without worrying of being mugged, killed or maimed?

Travel Info
I am planning on Moving to Atlanta, and I love city nightlife. I know in any city, you should be careful but I've heard that Atlanta is a very dangerous city and I find that disappointing being that may stop me from enjoying it's nightlife. Is Atlanta's crime really that bad, and if it is, why? I like walking in cities, and going for walks in parks and around my house and don't want to give up those things. I want to live within the circle north of I-20 in Decatur/Druid Hills, or even Buckhead. Please be specific with answers. thanks!

The Marietta / Alpharetta answer was real nonsense considering that you specified that you're thinking about the Decatur area and Buckhead.

In my personal opinion (as a former Decatur resident and current East Atlanta resident) is that Buckhead is overpriced, a huge hassle in general, and very boring. But I'm not a nightclubber. I might think differently if I liked to stay at the bars until closing time.

Decatur is fantastic for eating and drinking (and for live acoustic music at Eddie's Attic), but it's a very mellow scene. As in, seriously laid-back. Decatur is also close to Virginia-Highland where there are lots of hip restaurants and bars (again, a much more mellow scene than Buckhead). It all depends on what type of nightlife you like.

It sounds to me as if you should consider living in the general area of Decatur / Virginia Highland / Little 5 Points. Even going toward I-20, those neighborhoods are changing extremely rapidly. I live south of I-20 and I have no problems / concerns at night. I have to admit, though, that there are a few rough neighborhoods between my location and Little 5 Points to the north. But within a year or two the poor people will be gone from those areas, to put it bluntly.

Atlanta is no more dangerous than other major American cities. You just need to use common sense. There is quite a bit of crime, but most of it is in the poor neighborhoods.
Others
Anywhere, I have been here for 15 yrs and never been attacked
Merieta and alphareta. Buckhead is ok. Your best information would come from a police dept. But do believe that all parts are not safe (i.e. fulton county). but this area is safe if you have the right "peice" on you. lmao.
Virginia Highlands, Decatur and Midtown. And I've lived downtown for years and never been attacked (knock on wood). Like anywhere, have common sense.
None, thats true for the whole US though. If you hadn't noticed ppl are crazy and crimes don't just happen in metro areas and a night. Crimes happen in rural areas and in the broad daylight.

Atlanta is as safe/safer than any other metro area its size.
