I will be attending a convention in Georgia this June and had some concerns about the Atlanta region.? |
Travel Info As I mentioned above, in late June I will be attending a convention in Georgia. Specifically, it will be in downtown Atlanta. It'll be my first time there, and I have heard the city is really beautiful and historic, and for a history buff like me, I would really enjoy it. However, I have been getting reports from people who have visited that although the people in Atlanta are generally nice, there is a dominant theme that Northerners are not welcome. I don't know if this has anything to do with the Civil War, but it does concern me. I think with my accent (New York) people will know easily, and it puzzles me. (I always wanted to date a Southern girl, because Southern women appreciate manners and chivalry). Does anyone have any comments?-Steve Travel Tips I'm from Vermont, I used to get called a Yankee, as a joke by people.... Nobody is going to do anything to you because you are from the North, they'll just pick on you for it. Most of the people i've met here in the Metro Atlanta area aren't even from Atlanta or Georgia. I've met numerous people NYC, Boston, Pennsylvainia... so no worries there. The Midtown area of Atlanta is very nice and if you like history (I'm a history fan myself) you should definately check out some of our historic sites (of course most of them revolve around the civil war). My favorite in Atlanta is the "Atlanta History Center", or Emory University also has a museum, the Cyclorama at Grant Park/Atlanta Zoo, and the list could go on and on.... Have a fun trip! Others Watch out for people selling fake tokens for the MARTA transit system. Also watch out for people who ask to follow them into alleys and other out of the way places. This happened to me in 1995 and I imagine things are a lot better in 2007. I think the North/South rivalry is moot because many New Yorkers have moved to the South for cheap land and good schools. Atlanta has become cosmopolitan. Atlanta is a melting pot of many different cultures (like most large cities). If people are rude to you, they are going to be rude regardless of where you are from. Be friendly and the "natives" will be friendly back. Have a great trip! I visited Atlanta in March, and I never encountered any hostile or rude attitudes, and I'm from the Seattle area. That counts as the north, right? Just have a good attitude toward them. Oh, and look out for all those one-way streets. They'll get you every time. Also, if you need a cool place to go for dinner, try Fogao Gaucho. Beef on a stick from a fire pit. I didn't get to go. I'd give that lack of dinner a big :( p.s. - No matter what anybody tells you, don't go to Waffle House, unless you plan on eating the grits with processed cheese. Also very :( I love Atlanta, but there isn't really that much history there. Heck, it all burned down courtesy of Sherman, but it wasn't really old when that happened. Downtown Atlanta can be dangerous like any big city, but if you are a New Yorker, you are already street-wise. Lots of nightlife, particularly in Buckhead area. Northerners are totally welcome even though there are lots of jokes and so forth. In fact very few people who live in Atlanta were actually born there and you will meet people from all over. The South has been very poor traditionally but with plenty of pride. People really don't like to hear how you "do things up north." If you want a taste of the best of the old south, take a day trip out to Madison, GA , for example. It is about an hour east of ATL right on Interstate 20 It was recently named the best small town in the US. Lots of movies and TV shows filmed there. Beautiful antebellum homes, several museums. Hope you have a great trip. Southern gals like Yankee boys just fine. This is not true. In fact Atlanta has the biggest influx of notherners moving here in all of the South. No one will treat you bad because you are from New York. In fact I love the way yall talk. It think it is really cool. I like Boston and New Jersey too. I think they are all hot. Come on down. We will treat you like everyone else! You will love Atlanta. It is a great city. there is a lot of historic sites in Atlanta. there are many homes to tour etc. Georgia is one of the original colonies so there is rich history there. As far as the Yankee thing- southerners do not hate Yankees and will not judge you for being from new york. What we don't like is for visitors or new comers to come in and criticize they way we do everything so just be nice and you will be well received |
