Can anyone tell me the "bad areas" to live in Atlanta?

Travel Info
And can anyone also tell me WHY those areas are bad?

Travel Tips
I have to disagree with many of the comments that have been made about the South Atlanta area being a bad place to live.

We've lived in South Atlanta about a year and a half and love South Atlanta (it seems that everyone else who has answered so far is scared of this place, but I have to wonder if they've even been here to see it in the last decade).

We live in Ormewood Park, which is right between East Atlanta Village and Grant Park (where the zoo is), and it's beautiful, full of kids and people walking their dogs, nice gardens and really nice people. It's also 10 minutes from downtown or other cool Intown neighborhoods. We have three kids under the age of 8 and feel very safe here.

If you really love the suburbs and shopping at big box stores, this may not be the place for you (although Target, Lowes and Best Buy are just a few minutes away), but I can't imagine wanting to live outside the perimeter (boring suburbia, in my opinion). I guess I am a little more urban and a little less scared of variety.

Do a quick search on Ormewood Park, East Atlanta Village, and Grant Park and I think you'll see that the people who are still scared of these areas just haven't seen the place for a long time and are holding on to their parents' outdated perspectives. Anywhere inside the perimeter of I-285.
Lived there 7 years.
College Park... south east atlanta... its so ghetto- lots of crime.
South of atlanta you can find some ghetto spots. I'd stay away from college park and east point. You can go further south of atlanta (outside the perimeter) and things clean up again. Or you can head northeast or northwest atlanta. Trust me if you visit here you will quickly know which areas to stay away from.
Generally speaking, I would avoid the entire quadrant of the city to the south of I-20 and west of I-75/85. Southwestern Atlanta has a very poor population and bad access to supermarkets, etc. Also most areas south of I-20 on the eastern side of I-75/85 have fairly high crime rates, except for Grant Park and East Atlanta. So I-20 is a huge dividing line.

And there are some very sketchy areas on the western side of downtown/midtown/northwestern Atlanta. But there are always exceptions such as Castleberry Hill: a trendy, racially mixed neighborhood that's in that zone.

It's not only a racial thing, though the most crime-ridden areas of Atlanta tend to have a very high percentage of African-American residents. On the other hand, areas such as Lithonia and Stone Mountain are full of beautiful subdivisions with middle-class (almost 100% black) residents.

In a broader sense, anywhere in Atlanta is a bad place to live if you have a long commute. The traffic is terrible, so you should try to live close to where you work.
