Road trip through Georgia ,Where to stop??Help!!? |
Travel Info I will be traveling with two year old daughter from Ohio to Florida and will need to stop and sleep over night at a hotel in georgia. I do not want to end up in a scary druggy type neighborhood or an overpriced tourist neighborhood. So I was hoping somebody from the GA area could help me out on where is the Safest Cheapest place to stop. I have narrowed it down to 4 different cities other then Atlanta. Atlanta is the obviuos one but I belive it will be overpriced. Here Is the other ones Dalton, Marietta, Jackson, Or Jonesboro .Please Help me pick the SAFEST,Cheapest area. Thanks in advance for everyones help Travel Tips I think Dalton is probably the safest and cheapest... It's AT LEAST an hour to about an hour and a half from Marietta/Atlanta area, it is very rural, so it is probably going to be a quiet area and should be pretty safe. Kennesaw is a good area too, but be aware that Kennesaw depending where you stay has a lot of college kids in the area (near KSU), I would also depending where you stay in Marietta, it should be safe, but definately stay away from hotels near Delk Rd, Fairground Rd, Highway 41, esp. if you are looking for cheap, because they are a little sketchy. I would stay away from Jonesboro because it is a few exits away from the airport, depending where you stay it may not be safe and you will probably hear planes from the world's busiest airport. Others you should stop in charelston south carolina and eat at sticky fingers. thats a really good bar-b-q resturaunt me Marietta would be good area. Try somewhere along Windy Hill Road. There are plenty of eating places around there. The last time I drove from ATL to the Dayton, OH area, it took about 12 hours or so. Dalton is around 1.5 hr NW of ATL and isn't a bad place. As an out-of-towner, I wouldn't stay in Jonesboro. Kennesaw (Barrett Pkwy), Marietta, and Smyrna (Windy Hill Rd) areas are all on I-75 before you get to ATL and good areas. My advice has to do with timing. Mon - Fri, morning rush hours into ATL start about 7am and last until about 8:45am. The only drive I dread more is the afternoon rush hours and LA traffic. Afternoon rush starts a little after 3pm and ends whenever the wrecks, over-turned trucks, and suicides are cleaned up. Seriously, time your drive to come into Atl any time other than the rush hours. Once in Atl, your drive to FL should be smooth and boring. I drove to Ocala in January and there was only one spot of road construction. There are some clean gas stations and rest areas to stop at on your journey. Other than that, remember that you can bargain on a room. If you walk into a hotel in the evening and a room is vacant, then haggle. Most likely they will not rent the room out that evening, so half price is better than nothing at all. I hope you have a great trip! ATL native Ok.. well.. if you insist on staying around the atl area of ga for that night , I would stay in gwinnett... it is a little east but, is nice and not "druggy" and also.. if you are gonna take a day trip in atl , you can go to chamblee ( right down I 85 ) and park at the train staion and ride the train downtown and do all of the activities w/ the girls ( aquarium, museums, underground atl, etc.) Vita is also right about the traffic! But, my real suggestion , if you could wait out about 5 more hours, is to stay in SAVANNAH.. oh Savannah, I LOVE IT!!! But, I would not stay in historic district, I would drive the extra 10 -15 min. out onto tybee island and book a hotel... I think we paid $65.00 a night out there but, we were not beach front... we were right across from it!! I loved it! And, then you can drive back into savannah to do the historic district... go to this website and it will tell you more about it! http://www.savannah.com/index.cfm... OOOHHH... I forgot about Helen Ga, helen is really nice, it is a little "swiss/ german" town! THere is so much to do and yet it is so small! But, you can tube down the river and there is a small water park w/ slides and a lazy river! Also, there is a small amusement park that would appeal to the girls!! http://www.helenga.org/ |
