What is the truth about Atlanta?

Travel Info
Being a person of African origin lots of people are saying Atlanta is a great place for blacks to live, but on all my research it seems like racial tensions are high and segregation is dominant. I'm looking into nice place to live and all the white seem to say go north, stay away from the south, but blacks say otherwise. The most disturbing news I've read is Fulton County where so called "affulent" whites want to divide the north from the south...I've lived in many places and seems like all areas where there are blacks...they call it high crime area and i know some of that is just ignorant fear of blacks....where are the good places for an average middle class couple with an infant to move to in ATL?

I would love to answer you question objectively, I got a lot of thumbs down with a prior question, and dont want that, just because I'm white! I think much of the problems in Atlanta is not racially motivated. Much of the crime is black on black, and Latino on Latino. as a white father of 3, I must say that some of my best friends are black, and educated. There is not a problem with these people fitting into any neighborhood they want to live in. Your addendum speaks of white people and pot. If you research the arrests that have been made you will find out that the Lions share of them are Latino immigrants, who are being arrested. So I find your accusations to be a bit offensive. Now on to the advice, If you look into the Smyrna area of Northwest Atlanta, you will find some really nice new areas to live that are very diverse. There are areas in Marietta also that are growing. You may want to check on the Cable Co.s first to find out where you are going to work because traffic can be brutal. After rereading your question about Fulton co. you need to look at the shape of the county, its shaped like an hourglass on crack! The people in the North of the Co. have different needs than the people in the south. That is why they want to be separated, not because of their financial situation. I dont want to rant on so I hope that clears up some of your questions. Now good luck, and happy hunting! Source(s): long time Metro Atlanta resident

I like in Atlanta and I'm biracial: half white, half black. You shouldn't let those rumors scare you because they aren't true. My friends love me even though we are all different skin colors. There are some close minded bigots here but you learn to ignore them.
charter and comcast are the 2 cable companies here, If you buy a home in 150k or above range, you shouldn't have to worry about crime. Atlanta's too busy to hate. Lived here since '82

I have lived in Atlanta for 38 years and have no idea what city you are speaking of. Atlanta is one of the most racially friendly cities in the country, and there is very little racism in the city. What there is mostly exists between black and latino groups, but that is rare. The metro city is about 38% black, and the city government is run by African-Americans. There are major black universities but there is NO segragation. I really am wondering who you are listening to. Our city is HARDLY afraid of blacks. That is a joke, right? Atlanta is a great city, and you would be welcomed here. Cox Cable is based here, and there is a strong presence with other companies like Scientific Atlanta.
I live in Duluth. My area is mostly a mix of white, black, and Indian families. Most are middle class with young children. The area I live in is affordable and safe. Like another answer said, if you buy a house at $150,000 or more then you will probably be in a safe neighborhood. I personally have not experienced any racism or seperatism between whites and blacks here. Honestly, both groups seem to be focusing their attention on the illegal Hispanic population. That seems to be where all of Atlanta's racism is rearing its ugly head. I hope you find a place where you and your family can be happy.
