What are some places you should visit in Atlanta?

Travel Tips
Here are some good activities. I am a native and have done them all. You will have a great trip -

(1) See the laser show at night at Stone Mountain Park. 20 minutes east of downtown, the laser show starts when it is dark and last til about 10:15. Take a blanket and a picnic with some wine. Lots of fun.

(2) Take a trip north of the city for about an hour & half to Dahlonega, GA. Mountain town, site of first gold rush, US Mint was here, and it is just a fun little mountain town. Also see the falls nearby and go eat at the Smith House.

(3) World of Coke & Aquarium are right next to each other. Call ahead for tix.

(4) Go eat dinner at one of the Buckhead Life Group restaurants in Buckhead, esp. Fogo de Choa. Awesome food. You might also check out the Varsity (greasy food but fun), the top of the Westin downtown for great views of the city, or anywhere else that serves southern food. A must is the Varsity, a fun place to grab a 鈥渘aked dawg and some rings.鈥? It is an Atlanta icon.

(5) Go see a movie at the Fox Theatre one night - historic theatre. Normally movies play during the summer when there is not a show there. Really worth going to. Also check out the Krispy Kreme factory just down the road from there (2 min away on E. Ponce de Leon). By the way, pronounce it Ponce-day-Lee-on like the locals do!

(6) Go check out the Cyclorhama when you go to the zoo. They are right next to each other. I'm spelling it wrong, but it is worth seeing and shows civil war history. The zoo is a very good city zoo, and it has two popular pandas 鈥?only one of three zoos in the country to have them.

(7) Go to a Braves game and go early. Check out the Buffalo hot dogs in the plaza, the Braves museum and the Coke pavilion at night for a great view of the city.

(8) Check out Chastain Park Ampitheatre and see if any groups you want to see are in town. GREAT place to see a concert. You can take a picnic basket, set up a small table (get one from the hotel) and sit out under the stars for a concert.

(9) Six Flags is a great amusement park, and you can also venture 30 minutes north of the city to White Water, a large water park that can occupy most of a day.

(10) Civil war history is everywhere, and you can get your fill at the Kennesaw National Battlefield, 30 minutes north of downtown in Kennesaw.

(11) You can鈥檛 go to Atlanta without stopping by all the Martin Luther King things at the MLK History Center. The Carter Presidential Library is near here. Martin Luther King Historical Park http://www.nps.gov/malu/

(12) Another must is the new GA Aquarium, the largest in the world. It is absolutely awesome and is only 2 years old. The World of Coke, a really fun museum on the drink is next-door and very worthwhile.

(13) Atlanta鈥檚 High Museum of Art is the best in the South and features international works and traveling shows. In midtown, it is close to everything.

Traffic is bad everywhere from 4 to 6:30 at night, so plan on being somewhere before it starts. The city is safe during the day, but it is still a metropolitan city - meaning that most people head to the suburbs after dark. You will know where is safe, so don't worry. It is tons safer than New York or Boston, and you will feel fine wherever you go. Have a nice trip!

The above site will give you some information.
The Fox Theater, the Coca-Cola Museum, CNN studios, the Varsity, the Georgia Aquarium, the Clermont Lounge, Little Five Points.
On my last visit to Atlanta, I visited Stone Mountain and the CNN building. I had a friend that just got back from Atlanta. He visited the Coke museum. He enjoyed tasting all of the different varieties of Coke products that are sold around the world.
I hope you get more thorough answers from the Atlanta crowd. I will be checking back on this since I will be visiting Atlanta next summer.
