Racism against caucasians in Atlanta, GA? |
Travel Info How is the racism against whites in Atlanta, GA? I am considering moving there to become a police officer, but I do not want to be constantly "hated" because of being white, since the majority of Atlanta is African-American. I just hear rumours and would like some confirmation, before I decide on going there. Travel Tips You have a legitimate question. Majority-Black administrations around America have frequently (even consistently) demonstrated hostility to non-Blacks. Be careful if you are planning to join the Atlanta PD: The police chief is Richard Pennington, a product of the Marion Barry era in Washington DC. He had to leave DC when a reform mayor was elected. He was hired as the New Orleans police chief by that city's mayor Marc Morial, another known cocaine addict and criminal. A federal judge found that Richard Pennington committed widespread racial discrimination against White police in New Orleans. That didn't bother Morial.. Pennington had to leave New Orleans when Morial's term in office ended and the new mayor was elected on a reform ticket. The new mayor was Ray Nagin, and for Pennington to be unacceptable to "Chocolate City" Nagin is really saying something. Pennington was hired as police chief for Atlanta anyway, which gives you an idea of how that city's administration feels about non-Blacks. http://www.bestofneworleans.com/archives... http://www.bestofneworleans.com/dispatch... Others Dumb *** come in every color... I don't think you should base your opinion on that unless you are afraid to face the realities that minorities face every single day! I am "constantly hated" because of being black every single day, no matter where i live, so get over it! Tyler: I have never heard on the network news of any racism against whites....anywhere....ever. I don't think it exists. I think "racism" is something that whites do, and not something that is done to them. I am sure that Atlanta, or Washington DC, or Gary...or any other inner city would be just peachy for whites. Funny thing about that. Most people will treat you at least as well or as badly as you treat them. Atlanta's no different. Whatever you do, don't be a racist, ignorant cop. There are too many of you anyway. Break the mold! What does it matter to you anyway? If your racist ( and I sense a hint that you are ) you'll always have a problem. My father was an Oakland police officer for 25 years, and we are white. He was respected, fair and made a difference in many poverty stricken neighborhoods. If you are going into the force with that kind of attitude, you will never contribute anything to society. When my father retired, he told me the one thing that made him ashamed of wearing the badge, was his fellow officers that were always pulling people over because they "figured" they were up to no good. You have to realize that your duty as an officer is to respect the community you are in charge of patrolling and be the person others look up to. Especially a white man! You should educate yourself further and possibly live in less white neighborhood in order to meet people of different races. You, yourself are already assuming and stereotyping....not good qualities to have when your a cop. Again, break the mold because what we need in life are not people who "act" brave because they are in charge, we need people who are brave and take charge for the sake of the community- no matter what color that com minty is. There are black racist and yes you will have to deal with racism. Some african americans think whites are all the same and they blame whites for their problems, just as some whites think blacks are all the same, etc etc....and as a cop you will be dealing with people who are like that..because people like that are often criminals ...but I don't think the people you work with will be a problem. They have a good police department and they need good cops, and if you are good, they know they don't have the time nor the luxury of caring what you look like....cops are cops are cops...I think they are color blind when they look at each other (I hope I'm not being idealist but that's my experience). You may see this in other public agencies...especially policially run agencies, and a lot of discrimination lawsuits have been won by whites over the years. In Atlanta, you will run into all types of racist. However, I live in Atlanta and most people are lovely and don't care what color I am...which is what I really like about Atlanta...it's diverse enough that, in general, nobody thinks about what color the person standing beside them is. This is the city of Dr. King, and to me, he is the Saint of Atlanta, and I believe he watches over this city and brings something special to us. |
