you could catch a ferry over the otherside of the bay and stay at russell for a night or 2. its quite historic over there. if your coming over about this time its winter here so you probably wouldn't have to book just go and take a tiki tour around and find a place you like. i don't know of any neat places but there are quite a few hotels/motels in piha. and plenty of touristy things to do, speed boat through the 'hole in the rock', swimming with dolphins, trips up to ninety mile beach, helicopter rides...
