Don't fly via LA, because you'll just get grief from US immigration. I fly their by plane. Found it extemely tiring on my arms so decided to go in a plane. Least stops is actually better I find - cuts out all the waiting round in airports when you totally knackered. Enjoy its a truly amazing country. I love it. I flew to New Zealand in 2004 via Hong Kong on Cathy Pacific. I thought they were pretty good.. only had an hour to get on to the connecting flight from Hong KOng to New Zealand leg!! It is a long way. I would advise, if you can, to stop on the way there and the way back to break up the flight a bit. Like someone else has said, don't go via LA. ONe of my friends did this and spent about 2hours in immigration and it was a complete hassle! Check out austravel for flights. I flew with Emirates, Glasgow, Dubai, Sydney then Christchurch - they give you a free night in the Millennium Hotel in Dubai if you have a long connecting flight. Check out expidia.com. I just flew to New Zealand via Air New Zealand and it was excellent service. No stops directly from LA to Auckland.
