Travel Tips For students the lowest crime rate area that the campus shuttles run to is the Far West area. Debates about north Austin and south Austin are debates about the personality of the area in which you live which until you experience them first hand, is hard to decide upon. Personally, I will not live anywhere east of I-35 and prefer north of the river whenever possible. I'd suggest talking to a realtor for the area and asking about the Far West area. The Austin apartment market is heavily dependent upon locators so you can get a good deal and be informed too. I would never live in North Austin but that is cause the south or southwest side or either downtown is a lot safe and it's close to the colleges around. I lived in Austin for the last 17 years. No one knows for sure. South Austin is great, very close to downtown, the Strip, Campus and just terrific. Austin's bus system is very good and they also have hike and bike trails that can get you anywhere in the city. But you have to be safe anywhere you go. Take a class in self defense. Look for a family with an apartment to rent in the area between South Congress and Lamar. But please be careful anywhere that you go. Be sure and go to the Summer concerts at Zilker, too.
