Travel Info Why was austin chosen as texas' capital? Travel Tips Why was Austin chosen as the site for the Capital? Austin was not the first choice for the location of the Capital. In fact, the Capital has been in a dozen other places around Texas before it was moved to Austin. In 1838 at the suggestion of the Republics then President, Mirabeau B. Lamar, the new Capital was chosen, founded on a settlement called Waterloo. Scenic landscapes, a large number of natural resources and its central location, made Waterloo a good choice for the location of the new Texas Capital.
