Austin TX....is it a good place to live? |
Travel Info Want a place to start over. 30 years old. handyman. Want to start a band. How is it there? Travel Tips I always tell my friends who are visiting--it's a little boring just to visit, but it's wonderful to live here. We don't have a big art scene (although the city is working on it), but you can hear a live band at just about every bar and coffee shop and a lot of restaurants. TONS of open-mic nights and loads of ads in the Chronicle (free daily paper, check it out: http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/... and at http://austin.craigslist.org for/from musicians seeking to form a band. Craigslist is also probably a good place to see about a handyman job. The city is pretty laid back and definitely casual. There's a niche for everyone, even if it's a small niche. Austin is more like a really big small town than a city. People smile and nod at strangers on the street, hold doors for each other, chat at bus stops. But it's a big enough place that you don't feel suffocated, like I do in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business and thinks they can run it better. There are tons of parks and internet access at every library, plus wi-fi in every coffeeshop. Great bookstores. The greenbelt, too, is amazing, so's Zilker park. It's sunny 99% of the time and we have several farmers' markets. The city is expanding a lot, too, so that whole "deflating housing market" thing doesn't really apply here. If you're looking to buy a house ANYWHERE in the city, be prepared to pay a lot and/or get a roommate. Others This is a great city to live in. Theres something for everyone here. It's got city life without the big city problems, and it still feels like a small town. As far as starting a band, we have a saying here: It's better to be a band from Austin than to be a band in Austin. Not to discourage you. If you have a fresh sound, you can be successful. Just about every bar here is a music venue. Yes, it'll be great for you, especially if you are from a "blue state" area. The main troubles with living in Austin (besides the usual growing-city stuff, traffic, high rents etc) are some segregation and the fact that you are so far from anywhere that's worth going. The nearest destination is the Gulf Coast, and that's not so great. But the city itself is fabulous. Right now may not be the best time to find work as a handyman anywhere, but Austin is at least as good a place as any to try. Austin is a great place to live!! You should try it out for a few months. You'll be hooked. Glenn Kawesch here, Watch out for allergies in this city. Thanks, Glenn Kawesch Glenn Kawesch |
