Travel Tips When Texas was an independent country, the second president Mirabeau Lamer wanted to move the capitol from Houston to a site near a small Indian community called Waterloo. The place was named after Steven F. Austin who is referred to as the Father of Texas because he was the one who brought the first settlers into Spanish Texas. When Sam Houston was reelected after Lamar, he wanted the capitol to remain in Houston because near Austin and Waterloo was a small spring where the Indians would go to as a resort, and because of this, there were possible chances of Indian attacks.
