Are there many Muslims in Austin, Texas? |
Travel Info My friend read that the Muslim population is high in Austin. Does anyone know if this is true or not? Travel Tips I have not read that, but I also have not cared one way or another. If you are from Austin, then you know that it is very accepting of all races, religions, sexes & sexual orientation. I did a little research, b/c I didn't know the answer and there turns out to be several restaurants (around 7 or 8) that serve zabiha meat. There is a muslim (or arabic - I couldn't get a good answer on this) high school ( I had no idea about). There are two big mosques, a couple of large community organizations for muslims and as the person stated above a large UT muslim student association. Saying all that, I do not know that it is a higher population than any other town this size, and there are still people with prejudice due to the events of 9/11. We should all learn to open our eyes, ears and hearts before opening our mouth. Others no, i heard there are a lot in michigan. I wish I knew the answer to that one, but I don't. But I certainly hope not. There are enough to have an active Muslim community center. There is also a large Muslim Students Association at UT. I'm gonna have to agree that I don't know if it's higher than other cities. I feel like Houston and Dallas have a ton more Muslims. I don't see why this should stop anyone from coming here, seeing as my family is Muslim. (although not me personally). There are several restaurants in the area that specialize in Persian, Pakistan etc types of foods. There's a North Austin Muslim Community Center and the Islamic Ahlul Bayt Association. We have 2 mosques: one on Nueces and one on Robbins Pl. But I mean it's not the whole city is overrun with Muslims. I def. wouldn't say it's that prominent unless you're specifically look for such associations because I didn't know about these until recently. So if you're concern is prejudice, I would say shame on you and you have nothing to worry about. If it isn't and maybe your friend is Muslim and wanted to find a community with other Muslims, then I would say Austin, Dallas or Houston would be good places to start. I personally love how diverse Austin is. It just adds to how cool we are. Hook 'em Horns. |
