Is Austin Texas a culturally diverse place like California? |
Travel Info I am from LA, actually West LA and wanted to know if it will match the diversity I am used to. I have read it is much more humid than California but LA has become kind of tropical in the summer with rainstorms out of nowhere. never happened 20 years ago, global warming I guess.. Anyway, if anyone is a transplant from Culver City, or west LA how does it compare. ? is it like I heard from some posters? the whites on newer west side of town and blacks and latinos the east side , poorer part of town. isn't there a class of blacks and latinos in Austin that are doing well too.? I'd like to own my house free and clear in 10 or 15 years . I just don't see that happening in California Also, any health food stores like Trader Joes, tennis and golf clubs..etc. Travel Tips I moved here (kicking and screaming) from LA (Hermosa/MHB) 5 1/2 years ago. It was the best move I've ever made! Yes, it's diverse. Yes, it's more humid. Austin is the biggest little city I've ever seen, and I'm well traveled. As far as ethnic neighborhoods, sure...there are areas but in my opinion, Austin has done a great job of mixing everyone up. It's rare to hear of any racially motivated crimes etc. Austin does have minority classes that are doing exceedingly well! Bottom line, Austin just isn't like any other city in Texas. It bucks the trends and stigmas of Texas but...there's still pickup trucks, great country music, Texas Twang and best of all FRIENDLINESS! This town is one big hug. I am a Realtor and I specialize in central Austin. It's very affordable, and named one of the top cities to buy property as an investment. A big percentage of my clients last year came from California and...none have left! It's funny, of my 6 closest LA friends, 3 are here and 1 is relocating here in May. Whole Foods was founded in Austin and is headquartered here. Enough said! Austin emphasizes small/local business too. We have great funky coffee shops, plenty of shopping, great nightlife, endless places to eat (that are not chain). We also have 7 lakes in the area...the largest is almost 70 miles long. Plenty of sports etc. too. Prevention Mag. just named us the second best walking city in the country overall. We were behind Madison, Wisconsin...well, you can only walk up there about 3 months out of the year when the snow isn't flying, riiight? If Lance Armstrong can live here/train here-yeah, so can you and I! Trust, the kicking and screaming ended quickly, love it here--I go back and laugh at the fact that I thought LA was the best place to hang my hat! Source(s): http://www.prevention.com/article/0,5778... Other Travel Tips Lots of questions! Yes, Austin is pretty culturally diverse and is pretty liberal even by northern and west coast standards. It's also getting to be an expensive place to live, even though it's the home to a number of universities (U TX, St. Edwards, Huston-Tillotson, Austin Community College, with more in the vicinity). Yes, a class of blacks and latinos are doing well in Austin--it's just like any other large city, with poor folk congregating in poorer neighborhoods and rich folk mingling with their own. Housing costs are rising rapidly, but they're still cheaper than West Hollywood (I was just there over Christmas--nice place to visit, but....). You'll also find plenty of health food stores (Whole Foods is the big one here), tennis and golf clubs, campgrounds, parks, etc. Pretty city, but the traffic is also getting bad because of the rapid population growth (it's also the state capital, so everything has converged). If you want the ultimate in cultural diversity with the same amenities but a lower cost-of-living, consider Houston. Austin is only a two-and-a-half hour drive away, if you want something different. However, Houston is also semi-tropical, so you'll have to live with the changing weather. Austin is one of the most culturally diverse places in Tx. Weather is hot in the summer, similair to Ca, except without all the rain. Has all the same stores and stuff, univerisities too. The beach is a little farther, but the cost of living is MUCH better, espicially in real estate. Welcome to Texas! Tx resident Austin is everybody's fave. Try Wheatsville for organic goodies. Austin is pretty unique in Texas. You'll see more people out on foot all over town than anywhere else in TX. We do love our trux. The best thing about Austin is the laid back atmosphere and the great music. Say hello to the old ladies at Hippy Hollow :) You mean, are there a lot of liberal freaky-freakies like in California, yup. Austin is called Berkeley on the Colorado by those who live in surrounding counties. |
