It is 195 miles from downtown to downtown. The straight shot is I-35. It can be done in 3 hours during non-peak periods, but you better plan about 3 and 1/2 on a typical road trip because of all the spontaneous construction. There are two situations that will always take 4 hours:
- You leave Austin or Dallas betwee 4 and 7 pm on any Friday
- You leave Austin or Dallas between 3 and 7 pm on the final day of a holiday weekend

There is a Starbucks with drive-thru in Hillsboro, Waco and Temple. The longest stretch of highway without a gas station is between Hillsboro and Italy (15 miles).
