Going to Austin for 2 weeks. Ideas of great things to do? |
Travel Info Looking for cool things to do in Austin from June 4th-17th. Ideas? Travel Tips Go to a unique film event at the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown, and get served drinks and food while you watch: www.alamodrafthouse.com It'll be hot! Visit Zilker Metropolitan Park and take a dip in Barton Springs Pool, a natural spring-fed pool that remains 69 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. There's also the Zilker Botanical Gardens and hiking & biking trails. Rent a kayak or canoe and paddle around Town Lake. Park yourself on a blanket in a grassy spot near the Congress Avenue Bridge just before sunset and watch the world's largest urban bat colony emerge to feed just as it begins to grow dark. It's an impressive site, and folks gather to watch it nightly all summer long. Eat breakfast tacos frequently. It's an Austin thing. Try the enormous "Don Juan" at Juan In A Million, or build your own at the beloved Maria's Taco X-Press. If you like fancy grocery stores, visit the enormous Flagship Whole Foods Market in downtown. It might sound silly, bit it's practically a foodie theme park. Make a lunch of it. Also, Central Market -- a very nice high-end grocery store with a great cafe and a large patio that often features live music. Walk up and down 6th Street on a Friday or Saturday night. Pop into any bar that catches your eye. Listen to some live music -- it's everywhere. See the lowbrow and delightful musical comedy show at Esther's Follies. If you want to eat somewhere really special (and pricey), try the Driskill Grill or Uchi. Take one of the Segway tours of Austin (Google 'em), or the amphibious Austin Duck Adventures tour of land & river. Tour the State Capitol building. See the cave formations in nearby Georgetown, Texas if you have a car. Resources: Austin Chronicle online calendar http://www.austinchronicle.com/calendar...
