Is Austin a great city to live in? |
Travel Info Me an my husband want to relocate to Austin from Connecticut. We have a 2 year old boy, we love outdoors (hiking, biking, canoeing, beach or pool), going to festivals, traveling. Travel Tips If you are a left wing nutball you're going to love Austin. If you aren't, consider Williamson County, just north of Austin. Others If you like college towns with real good live music, liberal politics and laid back folks, but don't mind endless traffic jams, you may like Austin self Austin is a wonderful city for the things that you mentioned. It also, being in the center of Texas, will give you numerous areas to visit in other parts of the state that would serve as great weekend trips. Lots to investigate. Coming from Connecticut you will find it cheaper to live (isn't Connecticut considered one of the highest priced places to live in the US?) but although some consider Austin expensive it should compare favorably to your old home. My son has a 2 year old son (three in June) and there are lots of fun and educational things for him to do there. Your little boy will enjoy Austin. Good place for children and young families. It is indeed a liberal city, in the best of ways, I believe. There are people from all over the world that choose to settle there, and we have enjoyed the many different people from different cultures that we have met. The sky is still blue, there is lots of green year round and the winters being so mild more than makes up for the hot summers. As far as traffic jams are concerned - the same in any city that has grown quickly. More cars than road to go around so during rush hour there is more wait than rush, but people also have to get creative and find other ways to get around the traffic by going a different way sometimes. Lots of ways to solve this problem. It is, unfortunately, a problem of city living and if one wants to enjoy the advantages of the city there are always other things we do not enjoy so much too. I loved living there for 8 years, my two grown sons live there, and I will be returning there within a few months. I have lived lots of places and like Austin best. Hope you do too. Heck yeah!!! I would prefer to live in Austin, over Dallas. Outdoor activities are a major plus there. You can go canoing on the river. Also a must, try Barton Springs. Its a state or county owned spring that feeds into the river. Its a public swimming area, the water is sooo refreshingly cold on those hot summer days!!! There are plenty of picnic, and family areas as well around the Spring fed watering hole. It is a college town as well as a political hub, but you will never run out of things to do. If you love the outdoors, and you have kids, Austin is a wonderful place, lots of hills, trails, etc. Willy Nelson has his annual 4th of July picnic there too!! You can tour the Capital building anytime. AND, you are only 2 1/2 hours from Dallas. Great restaurants, and a lot of history. I would highly recommend!!! The trees, the history, and the landscape are gorgeous. Lived there, named my son after the place!! Great city. Period. |
