6th Street is where all the college bars are. It's a fun place to walk around on the weekends...but no more dangerous than any other "strip" in a college town. You don't want to live there tho...

Bad???

Lots of bars

Good times
lots of bars, booze, druggies, and such. Once a month they have a Thursday where everyone gets drunk and there are so many that the police only arrest the really, really rowdy ones.

I wouldn't let my kids hang out down there. There are also clubs that have raves with cocaine, meth, Ecstasy and such.

There are a few decent restaurants however. Go in the day time though or on a weeknight.

6th street aside, there are tons of other things to do and see in and around the Austin area.
live in Austin

runaway below confirms what I say. If you know what I mean.
6th Street used to be awesome back when there was a bar on every corner where you could hear live music featuring up-and-coming bands. Now it's just filled with shot bars and bars with pre-mixed frozen drink machines.

Nowadays 6th Street seems to cater to the 18-24 age range, so if that's you and you like frat guys or you're in a sorority, that might be right up your alley. The only places I can stand anymore on 6th are Logan's because of the cheap big beers, the great movie clips and the awesome 80's music, and Pete's Piano Bar. I think every town has a version of Pete's though.

However, if you prefer an "older" crowd (25-40), I'd suggest going to the Warehouse District in the 4th Street area. It's not such a meat market and people aren't trying to see how many shots they can take before they pass out. I hate to use the term "upscale" because there are plenty of casual places in that area that are not stuffy at all, like Fado's Irish Pub, Gingerman (a GREAT beer bar), and 219 West.

Whatever you're into though, you will not be bored on a night out in downtown Austin. Welcome to our town!
Bad! No, just a lot of bars and restaurants. It gets quieter as you go north on it. It's just where young people party.
