Moving to Austin soon, where should I live?

Travel Info
I'll be moving to Austin, TX in a few months, and would like some info/advice about where to look for an apartment. Safe neighborhoods, not too expensive, that kind of thing. Also where should I stay away from. I'll be working in the medical field, so someplace near a hospital? Thanks!

Travel Tips
Avoid anything in East Austin, it is the worst part of town. The best parts of town to live in are North, Northwest, and Arboretum. Round Rock and Pflugerville are more or less considered part of Austin as well since they are just a seemless transition from North Austin into them as you travel north. There are hospitals in all of those areas. There are 2 major employers of healthcare personel. Seton and St. Davids. Between them they run all the hospitals and many of the clinics. Hope this helps you. The further north you live generally the nicer the area.
Others
Get an apartment locator. They are free. Several ppl ask this question on here and it is impossible to know the best places for you to live. I personally love North Austin, but I have friends who swear by South Austin. There are hospitals all over Austin, so you should be safe picking any area of town.
try to stay out of the south and east part of austin, some parts are decent but most parts are dangerous. the outskirts are the more expensive parts but the older parts arn't so costly. im sure there are plenty of open appartments by the hospitals so try there first.

if you have kids, the leander and round rock school districs are the best.
live in austin and love it
If you have a family then you would prefer North Austin...if you're single and enjoy the night life and want to be immediately close to all the perks of the city then you should check out apartments/homes in the 78704 area (which is South Austin) preferrably around Barton Springs (by Zilker Park) and SoCo (South Congress. As far as areas to avoid, anything just east of I-35 can be a bit sketchy so I would stay west of 35.

Ideally you should have a job prior to moving since Austin is spread out over a large area. If the hospital you work at is in South Austin and you live in North Austin then you could be looking at nearly an hour commute. Traffic is bumper to bumper during rush hour here. Just something to consider.
Aks your future co-workers where they live, as you usually get a discount at some of the mega-apartment complexes if you work at a local hospital. Its typically a few hundred dollars off the first months rent.
Please avoid the mega-apartment complexes, which are all over Austin.
I live in one right now as I type this, and they are extremely impersonal. Way too many people and cars squeezed into one
area, as most complexed have 24+ units
with 25-30 apartments in each unit. No one socializes, people drive fast in the complex,
no one says hi or has any courtesy. I thank
god I only got a 3-month sublease, as now
I'm going to rent a little house in the area.
If you aren't really into meeting people,
and are self-contained, mega-complexes
might be for you. If you like to get to know
people you live with, and have social skills
you like to occasionally put into practice,
you might want to avoid them. The barton
springs and south congress area is pricier,
but way more friendly and close to downtown. Thats where I'm moving next week. Again, the mega-complexes are new,
and look pretty, and the leasing agent will take you on a little walk past the pool and vollyball court, but remember that you will
be walking coldly past people who won't so much as give you a wave for a whole year.
And the Asians are the worst. Won't say
hi, no eye contact, and literally walk away from you. And there are a lot of them.
Try to find something in the barton springs
area. Its the only area around decent jogging paths near the river, as well as being right next to downtown, and WAY more friendly. A warning that the north areas
with all the mega complexes have NO areas
whatsoever to jog in, and no parks.
Hope this helps, and welcome to Austin!
Come to KB homes on East William Cannon Dr.
My neighborhood is calm and peaceful and it takes less than 10 miles to get to St. David's and Brakenridge hospitals.
I've seen one storey house which is still available.
