my mom and i are going spend a couple days in austin. sure i've heard about all the great music and restaurants. what else do you do when u go to austin?

Previous poster beat me to the San Antonio answer. So I'll give the next obvious answer. Go to Dallas. It's more like 3 hours away though.

Mt. Benel
The lakes around Austin

Take the hour drive to San Antonio.
Dallas over Austin? Please.

San Antonio is fun, but I'd stick with Austin.
Everything that was listed above, it's spelled Mount Bonnell though. Hamilton Pool just southwest of town on 71 west.
Barton Springs, Zilker Park, Town Lake hike and bike trail.
The bats are under the Congress Ave bridge downtown. Call for times, usually about 30 minutes before sundown. You can take a Riverboat tour and eat dinner while seeing the bats.
Town Lake is the Colorado River running thru town, it can be confusing. I have no idea why the call the river a lake.
Nature preserves in and around Austin. 360 bridge has a cute little park. The Oasis mexican resturant west of town. Wimberly, New Braunfels south of town. And, San Antonio, if you keep heading south on I-35.
Oh yeah....Loop 1 is called Mopac! Memorize that! LOL
